Riding north

On Saturday the 21st we are jumping on a train here in London and head north to Luton. No we are not flying out, we are cycling away to save around 30miles of the worst and not so fun London. It will also give us a good start to the next 235 miles we are planing over the next six days.
This is the route as it stands right now and hopefully on the 26th of August we will have arrived.
We are planing to do around 35miles the first day and to shssss don’t tell anyone to wild camp, simply because I have given up on finding a campsite in that area.
The more we manage on the first day the less we have to do on the second day. So hopefully less that 55miles as we are staying at Whatoff Lodge Farm just north of Leicester for one night.
Then we are cutting right over to the bottom of the Peak District where we will be joined for some of the ride by our friend whom we are staying with that night. That would be around 43miles unless our friend knows a good short cut :)
The next day is our …

a review of Evergreen Farm Woodland Camping, East Grinstead, West Sussex, RH19 4NE

Description: (From ukcampsite) Evergreen Farm is set in beautiful scenery of fields and woodland close to the medieval town of East Grinstead. Evergreen Farm has 12 pitches each with an optional fire pit (wood provided) set in 10 acres of idyllic woodland incorporating a natural pond. Natural wildlife on the site includes deer and badgers.
Site visited: 14,15,16th of May 2010.
As seen on the blog: Light my fire.
Last minute booking and since we had already booked the train tickets we had to go with the site or else we didn’t have a place to sleep that weekend. Jane at Evergreen Farm was very nice and even when we missed our train and would arrive late we were told that that would be fine. She even called up to check if we could find our way ok.
We arrived around 21:30 and were greeted by Chris and big pig and a few dogs, who are only doing their job. Chris took us to our plot, where he had already left two deck chairs, portable table along with some firewood and water. We didn’t expect the chairs and table at all, thank you very much for that, it made sitting around the fire so …

a review of YHA Welsh Bicknor and campsite, nr Goodrich, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire HR9 6JJ

Description: (From their site) Outdoor folk will be spoiled for choice at this former Victorian rectory, set in 25 acres of relaxing riverside grounds with splendid views of the Royal Forest of Dean and Symonds Yat rock. Hire a canoe and take in the picturesque valley from the River Wye or choose pedal power to explore the Forest of Dean. Walkers will find miles of footpaths to follow – we recommend you start with the Wye Valley Walk which runs past the door.
Site visited: 10th of April 2010.
As seen on the blog: What goes down must go up.
If you arrive here on bicycle to make sure that you have some oomph left in your legs because you have to ride the one and a half miles from Goodrige to the YHA. Up one steep hill then a drop down to Welsh Bickor YHA. They are not lying on their website when they say that there is a very steep hill and a hairpin down to them.
We were very relieved to learn that the kitchen would be open and ready to cook us something. Because there was no way that we would be able to get back up that hill without …

A review of Pen-y-Dre Farm Holidays and campsite, Llanvihangel Crucorney, near Abergavenny. Monmouthshire, NP7 8DH, Wales, UK

Description: (From their site) An ideal holiday location especially for families or groups keen to visit The Black Mountains, Brecon Beacons, or walk the Offa`s Dyke Path. The village has The Skirrid Mountain Inn, which is the oldest pub in Wales and was used as Judge Jeffrie`s Court. The scenery is superb with The Skirrid Mountain behind and The Black Mountains just beyond the village.
Site visited: 8th of April 2010.
As seen on the blog: The roads have gone pots.
Pen-y-dre is a nice little site attached to the farm, which also is a self catering farm holiday cottages along with a farm Bed & Breakfast, so a bit of everything. We didn’t see the cottages or the B&B from the inside but from the outside they looked very nice.
I had emailed the owner to hear if it was ok to arrive a bit late since we would be on the train from London via Cardiff, which wasn’t a problem. We arrived around 19:30 and was greeted by a barking dog and a smile by the owner, the dog soon went quite as soon as we said hello, some guard dog :)
We where pointed to the campsite which is on the …

Campsite review of Waverley Park Holiday Center, East Cowes, Isle of Wight

Description: (From their site) Our marked pitches are levelled well, drained and fully serviced with electricity, mains water supply and grey water disposal. Most are a combination of grass and hard standing. A few are all grass and all have excellent views of the Solent.
Site visited: 31th of October 2009.
Waverley Park is more an caravan site than a campsite though it got all the facilities your need while camping. The toilet block were rebuild in 2003 so they look good.
The tent area is more an big sloping lawn so it was a bit hard to find a flat spot to pitch your tent. The toilet block is a fair bit away even pitched at the top of slope. Half way down the slope there is a sink where you can was your utensils.
The small’ish pool was not in use this time of year but right next to the play area, they got swings :) There is also a pub which I never had the time to sample, because it is only open in the summer season :(
Even in the low season the site was well kept and I’m very sure that when spring comes around this campsite would be …

Campsites in Croatia

Campsites visited:
Camp Galeb, Omis, Split
Camp Kate, Mlini, Dubrovnik
Camp Rogac, Slano, Dubrovnik
Camp Rozac, Trogir, Split
Camp Viter, Zaostrog

From what I can remember there were plenty campsites when I visited 20 or so years ago. And now there are more, for example I searched on the net for campsites near Dubrovnik and the airport and found around 4-5 easily. Cycling from the airport to Dubrovnik we saw many more. The same was true leaving Dubrovnik I knew of a few either from our map we had or from internet search, but we soon spotted more.
The campsites range from big Autocamps where the toilet block is pretty much the same as what you will get in a 4-5 star hotels. With restaurants, game zones, babysitters and probably computers to use so that you can check your emails. They are pretty much like a theme park and centre parks all mixed together, though could be a great place to bring you kids since there will be plenty for them to do. To little idyllic sites, which are run by a family who either lives nearby or in the building that has become reception come shower block.

What we looked for and found pretty much everywhere was …

Campsite review of Kamp Rozac, Camp Rozac, Okrug Gornji, 21220 Trogir, Split, Croatia

Description: (From their site) The camp “Rožac” is situated on the island of Ĉiovo which is connected with Trogir by a bridge. It is 2 km far away from Trogir and 26 km away from Split. The whole area of the camp is surrounded by a beautiful beach (cca 500 m) and the camp itself is hidden by a thich pine woods. The camp offers many facilities for your active and pleasant vacation; diving school with the possibility of researching the Adriatic sea bed in many localities, recreative, funny and cultural trips (by bus or boat) to different destinations (Fish picnic, Rafting, Dubrovnik, Split, Krka Waterfalls).
Site visited: 13th,14th and the 15h of September 2009.

As seen on the blog: Croatia day 5 : Sunday a day of rest ?
Camp Rozac is located on the island Ĉiovo for which you have to ride over and past Togir to get too. It is around five min ride from beautiful Trogir on it’s own little peninsula with a white pebbles beach on most of it’s south facing side.
We were greeted by not so bothered staff which really lacked the service with a smile.
We found a nice spot on the north coast so to speak …

Campsite review of Camp Galeb, 21310 Omis, Split, Croatia

Description: (From their site) Impressive poplars, birches, limes and tamarisk trees provide natural shade and shelter for camping plots and pitches, making the stay in our camp pleasant even in hot summer months. Even the farthest pitches are no more than 500 m away from the sea and the beautiful sandy beach.
Site visited: 12th of September 2009.

As seen on the blog: Croatia day 4 : bit drafty
Camp Caleb is just outside the lovely little town of Omis, that is if you wander around the old part, on the coast with beautiful sandy beach front.
The reception block which looks like any 4 star hotel reception holds the campsites “supermarket”, souvenir shop, 4 computers to surf the net on and have free wifi too. And right next to the reception was there a little bakery outlet, which sells some yummy chocolate dough nuts and a restaurant which by the look of things looked like you could rent for your weddings. The one toilet block we used looked like Walmart had gone into making campsites e.g. massive and there were two other blocks on the site.
The site also holds another restaurant and bar where I take it is where the mini disco an …

Campsite review of Camp Viter, Miosica 1, 21334 Zaostrog, Croatia

Description: (From their site) With long tradition in tourism and with 12000 m2 surface, we are dealing with 100 camping units. In the shadows of the most wonderful olive and laurel trees you will find peace and satisfaction. Most adorable is the clearest sea where you can see your own reflection if you just take a look from the camp. In the very neighborhood you can find post-office, ambulance, exchange office, drugstore, as well as many restaurants where you can enjoy adorable Dalmatian specialties.
Site visited: 11th of September 2009.

As seen on the blog: Croatia day 3 : border hopping
We were planning to stay in Gradac but the friendly staff in the tourist information told us that the campsite in town wasn’t the best and we should head 7km up the coast to Zaostrog to Camp Viter as that site would be better.
Cycling into the town and the campsite and with the friendly welcome it all looked promising, but when we found the toilet block it changed a bit.
Welcome to the good old grade 2 sandpaper (toilet paper) which is normally in quite a few campsites, but the first and last time on our tour in Croatia. The block was massive, …

Campsite review of Kamp Rogac, 20232 Slano, Grgurici, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Description: (From their site) The camping site is situated on the Kovačević family’s private property in the shade of carob – trees by the sand beach. Attractive for both young people and families with children. It can accomodate up to 70 people. You can enjoy differnet water sports, long walks and bike rides on a 6 km long bikeway by the cost. Situated close to hotel “Osmine” and Dubrovnik the camping site is a good starting point for going out, going sightseeing and enjoying delicious food.
Site visited: 10th of September 2009.

As seen on the blog: Croatia day 2 : marble’ous day
I had a search on the net for a site a short ride away from Dubrovnik and Solon looked like the perfect distance away, 35′ish miles.
We arrived in town and spotted the tourist information, who pointed us to one of the five campsites in the Solon bay.
We found the site a narrow road width away from the beach. The site looked like it used to be someone’s front garden. We found a space after someone told us that the proprietor of the site would come around in the afternoon to book us in.
The toilet block is a funny story, …
