Description: Bicycle Sales in Copenhagen, Denmark. Specialise in road and mountain bikes. They even got their own team so do look out for them.
Shop visited: August 2007 and June 2009

As seen on the blog: Living in a box
A lovely shop if you are looking for a new road or MTB bike, some very nice gear in there. A massive lower floor with plenty of bike p0rn and a upper floor full with cycling clothing and chaning rooms.
The shop is kinda hidden, my host in CPH had lived on the street next to it for 4 years in 2007. He only found out, that there was a bicycle shop there, when I arrived home with 2 empty bicycle boxes

When I visited in 2007 to do the same, e.g. get a empty box, they did not have said machine and was told yeah do grap a box less work for us at the ...

Our last day of our holiday started nice and slow, with a good breakfast and tea and some basic chilling out.
We went over to the local bike shop, Webike, to pick up some empty bike boxes to pack our bikes in.

Last minute snack before we had go to the airport. Dead easy on the Metro in CPH only 25min door to door.

Georg Jensen’s bling bike on display in CPH airport.
At the airport I had my last hotdog of the tour and we failed to find a Danish for Peli, but then again she should have enough in me :)
We got on the plane on time, and arrived in Gatwick on time, and found our bikes but no compressed air. Back home just after midnight and very tired from all that traveling but happy after a well needed holiday that we enjoyed very much.
3 miles ride back home in London, even late at night it was a wake up call for us, totally different from Denmark.
Today’s non ride was sponsored by WeBike in CPH. Located just around the corner from where we were staying. A lovely shop if you are looking for a new road or MTB bike, some very nice ...

We had a bit of a lie in today, I was more in the mood to just be lazy. But Peli’s nagging got me up and after breakfast we headed out. The original idea was to cycle to Roskilde along the national cycle route 4.

With the help of Bam the night before I had a general idea where that route were, find number 9 and it will take you to number 4, but where did number 9 start ?
So we just headed in the general direction and hoped for the best. After 30min or so riding Peli spotted on the other side of the road, a sign saying number 9, so we where on our way. Number 9 follows the old fortress wall around CPH so the ride was again on perfect cycle lanes and tracks.
After another 30min riding we found the national cycle route 4, that told us that the cycle route would be 38km to Roskilde instead of the 17km on the A-road.

We ended up at Ishøj strand and had a go on the swings before we had our lunch on the beach.

Even with a shot of the highest grade EPO that you can find ...

For 10 years or so I have been chatting and emailing with Mr. Owl. And every time there had been a change to meet up, something had come up and we didn’t make it.

But this time we finally made it and Mr. Owl made his way down to Copenhagen for a day touristing about.

The city hall in CPH.
Lucky the day was a Danish holiday and the weather was hot, hot and hot so all the local was either BBQ’ing in their back garden or on one off the many beaches around Copenhagen. So we only had the low season tourist to worry about.

Old and new together.

Walking up to the Danish parliament.

The grand tour took us via the main train station, the main square, city hall, the parliament where we could walk right under and through it, before a quick beer in Nyhavn.

A family cycling around and into the parliament.

War memorial under the parliament.

A sole demonstrator outside the parliament.

The stock market.

Then we made our way over to the royal palace but didn’t get to wave to the queen since her flag wasn’t up. Then we ...

Then we made our way over to the royal palace but didn’t get to wave to the queen since her flag wasn’t up. Then we went to the biggest tourist trap in Denmark and went, “Is that it, it’s so small” along with 100+ others, well it is in the name … The Little mermaid.

Old street in CPH.

After that we found a pizzeria and a take away to Rosenlund Park in the shade, for a nice break.

After that we headed over to Runde Tårn (The Round Tower), an observatory tower build by King Christian #4 who also pretty much build the rest of Copenhagen, such as then Parliament, stock market etc. Yes I know it was not him that pulled up the sleeves and got his hands dirty, but it is his name on all the buildings. Runde Tårn was build so that the King could ride all the way up to the top in his horse pulled carriage.

This is hot wader, when Peli said “he must be boiling in this suit” he gave a thumbs up to her, so we gave him some coins for an ice cream.

Then we went via Stroget, the main shopping drag, back to the main train station where we started.

It was great to see you finally Mr. Owl.

8 miles ride and around 4 miles walking, boy does that hurt when you are only used to ride your bike.

And then back to Bam’s for a brilliant BBQ in the garden with his neighbors.

Today’s ride/walk was sponsored by Magnums Temptations. A new flavor from Magnum. What can I say, advertising for ice cream on the hottest day of the year, so far, WORKS ! So after many miles walking around town, we gave in when we saw the 6th poster, ok ok ok after the first poster :) It was good but when you are hot and have walked many hours in the sun you want an ICE CREAM not a little taster on a stick.

We managed to talk Bam and his son Kev, into joining us for a ride. Of course we picked the hottest day of the year so far, 25c, to do the ride in.
We decided to head up the coast, past many of the wonderful beaches in CPH and past where people with money to spare live.

Just pumping some more air into the MTB tyres on the bike Kev was riding, a bike we borrowed from Bam’s neighbor.

View over the sea towards CPH, bridge to Sweden and the wind mills.

Seth enjoying the fresh sea air and the sun.

If you strain your eyes you will be able to see the two towers to the right of the picture of the nuclear power plant in Sweden, that many people in CPH wasn’t so keen on when it got build.

We cycled trough Dyrehaven, a big park to the north of CPH. In the park there is one of the oldest theme parks in the world and also the home of the oldest wooden roller coaster in the world.
We arrived a bit too early so we didn’t get to have a go. My knees were very happy for that, because it is ...

At around 15miles out we stopped for food at a marina. I know that Kev was well hungry and in need of some food. Because that burger didn’t last long :) It was Kev’s first ride over 20miles I think he said and he was a bit tired when we got home.

We then headed home the same way as we got there, with the wind in our backs.

Thank you Bam and Kev for a great ride. I still can’t believe that you, Bam, are going to be a Grand Dad, good luck to your daughter and your grand child, I’m very happy for you.

36 miles in the hot sun and tail wind all the way back.

Today’s ride was sponsored by Sultan Once. A suncream that you apply once and works. We tested out the factor 15, if you are light skinned you need too apply quite often and don’t expect it to keep you from burning, if in the sun all day. The Extreme factor 40, on the other hand can easily be called portable shadow. Though I tend to sweat much more when I use it, it is like it is a total block for sun, win and sweat. So I had a problem with getting suncream and sweat in eyes, but hey I didn’t burn after a whole day in the hot sun.

Was an very early start as we wanted to squeeze in a quick ride before we headed over to CPH. So me old man gave us a lift out to Nibe, a small fishing town 30km west of Aalborg.

Again a very sunny day though we had a head wind for most of the ride. We followed the fjord back to Aalborg, we passed many of these winged spinning around things which is scattered all over Denmark. This lot is nothing compared to the 2 old ones that used to be in the neighborhood, as they were biiiig.

And these windmills are old and didn’t make much noise. So compared to the new models I can’t see why people complain that much about them. When they are so good for us and this little rock we call home.

Limfjoren

This poor horse got woken up when Peli went hypersonic when she saw it sleeping.

We headed strait through town and I showed Peli a little hill which I have only managed once on a geared bike. Frydendalsvej at 11.2% is the road that runs parallel to this is one, so I’m pretty sure this one is the same. But it have a nice ...

Limfjoren

We headed strait through town and I showed Peli a little hill which I have only managed once on a geared bike. Frydendalsvej at 11.2% is the road that runs parallel to this is one, so I’m pretty sure this one is the same. But it have a nice little kick the last 20 meters which makes it harder than the other one.

Peli did give it a good go, top girl, while I just stood and took pictures of her attempt, lazy git. She came to a halt at the point where the kick starts which by coincidence is where a long time family friend lives and whom also arrived home at the same time. So after a quick hello and catch up we headed back to my folks for early lunch.

Aalborg main train station.

After lunch we made a some sandwiches and headed to the train station for yet an other 5 hours on the train, what the heck happened to the “lyn tog” the IC4 they have talked about for years over here.

The route out to Bam where we are starting, went over one of the steepest hills in CPH, Valby Bakke at 4%.

We arrived at my mate Bam’s place for a lovely BBQ in the sun before we went to Tivoli to try a roller-coaster or two. We enjoyed a traditional Danish ice cream with lots of guf, read sugar.

And we finished the night off with watching the light/laser show over the lake.

Today’s ride was sponsored by Gammeldags is. This is an ice cream severed with either 1,2,3,4,5 (or even more) balls of ice cream, and then topped with Guf (read sugar) and a fløde bolle (a chocolate coated egg white ball), as you can see above it take skill to eat but still namnam :)

My best mate from way back when joined us on a ride around town where I used to live and go to school.
We set off from my folks house and headed south and then up one if the steepest hills in the area, Nøvlingbakken at 3.1%, to get to Gistrup, where I started to go to school and kindergarten.

My old school in Gistrup.

While at the school, we saw a class going out for a ride in the good weather.
We went past the old house where I grew up which didn’t look like I remembered and also where I learned how to ride a bicycle and had my first major crash, still got the scar ;)
Forgot to take a picture of this major junction of my life ;(

We then headed over to an other old haunt of mine and where I meet my mate Bo for the first time all those years ago. We passed my old home, the school (arrgghh) and his old home. Before heading out to Hesteskoen where we spend many summer days doing nothing, I can’t really remember what we did out there but just that we went there.
The next bit of the ...

Before heading out to Hesteskoen where we spend many summer days doing nothing, I can’t really remember what we did out there but just that we went there.

The next bit of the ride was a bit boring as it took us through an industrial part of Aalborg. But we soon cut through one the campuses of Aalborg Technical University we Bo and me spend some time trying to learn stuff.

We went past the house my granddad built, the new owner had done a “changing room” on it e.g moved the main entrance, removed the garage and painted it blue and given it new roof and removed the big tree I used to play under.

And then we went via my grandparents grave, a nice and simple stone, miss them.

A Brooks on an old Boneshaker outside the bike shop where I spent a lot of my paper round money.

It is unfortunately that only a very few roads in Aalborg looks like the town did many years ago and lucky these streets are now protected.

The pregnant house is still getting bigger by the year(s).

My other grand dad painted these streets years ago as how he remembered them and you can see that in the pictures they are not far off now.

A slight zigzag around town took us up and over an other steep hill in town, Skansebakken at 5.9%, before we got to Lindholm Høje. A Viking grave site, and the settlement nearby is the first record of life in Aalborg. The settlement around 1500 years old and the first use of the towns name happened around 750 years ago.

Then back to the harbor where they are also building like no tomorrow and over the bridge out to the marina, the navy museum and another marina and ferry port over to Egholm a small island with 50 “odd” inhabitants.

After an ice cream stop, you just gotta, since it was so hot and you are on your bike. We headed over to the highest point in Aalborg via the poss part of town, Hasseris. Mølleparken is used as a open air arena in the summer, I just wonder how the animals in the zoo next door handle 20.000 singing along to the “summer plague” that is climbing the chart that year.

Then we headed strait home, again pass areas that used to be a field of empty space but now just full of new builds.

Ain’t it great to have a nice cold beer in the shade after a long day in the sun riding. As my mate said after I asked him if he fancied an other cold one, “well the first just evaporated on the tongue, so I better” ;)

37 miles of memories flushing back.

Today’s ride was sponsored by mum’s homemade ice cream. A few of you have tried my version it, even if I have to say it myself, mine is pretty darn good, but of course no way near my mum’s. This one had M&M’s in it and was namnamnamnamnam :)

We got up early for a lovely spread and got ready for today’s ride. Myold man gave us a lift to the start around 40 miles to the north ofAalborg. We set of 500m from the beach around 3km from Hirsals, inglorious sunshine and the wind in our backs.

We followed the national cycle route 1 also known as the north-sea cycleroute.

It took us through the area where I have spend many a dayrunning/jumping around in the dunes, swimming the sea and getting myback side majorly burned in the summer of ’76 (boy am I old). My folksused to own a summer house in the area and an uncle had one too.

We found a tower with a great view over the area we were about to cycle through, a wee bit windy up there but down in the trees we barely felt the tail wind.

We went over Uggerby å (a river if you can call it that) where we sawsome people canoeing just like I use used to do when I was a wee nipper.

The route varied from tarmac to gravel to forest paths and always wellsign posted so there was never any change of getting lost.

We had our elevenses at ...

It took us through the area where I have spend many a day
running/jumping around in the dunes, swimming the sea and getting my
back side majorly burned in the summer of ’76 (boy am I old). My folks
used to own a summer house in the area and an uncle had one too.

We found a tower with a great view over the area we were about to cycle through, a wee bit windy up there but down in the trees we barely felt the tail wind.

We went over Uggerby å (a river if you can call it that) where we saw
some people canoeing just like I use used to do when I was a wee nipper.

The route varied from tarmac to gravel to forest paths and always well
sign posted so there was never any change of getting lost.

We had our elevenses at Råbjerg Kirke just before we arrived at Råbjerg
Mile, a wandering sand dune. Danish television and movie studios have
over the year used this as a back drop for scenes in the desert.

Cycling heaven when the wind is in your back :)

We headed out to the church that the sand have reclaimed and now it is only the tower that is left standing. Lucky it is the low season in Denmark, because my memory of this place and where we were heading is a sea of German tourists and the odd Swede.

We arrived in Skagen the northern most town in Denmark to have a pizza for lunch. Before we headed out to Grenen (the tip of Denmark) on a beautifully laid cycle lane which ended in a bike parking lot.

The old light house and the new light house.

The end of the world as we know it, well the end of Denmark.

We were a little pressed for time and still had around 2 hours in head wind to go before Denmark curved around so we got the wind in our back. So therefor we just looked at the tip and headed down south.

The new light house and Skagen Harbor.

A couple resting after a walk out to the tip and back.

We then headed south on the national cycle route 1 until it became number 5 and continued on that. I didn’t know that there was so many trees, I only knew it was flat and flat and flat and therefor was a bit worried about the wind.
In Denmark the wind is our mountains.
But because of the trees the wind wasn’t a problem and we were making good time.

Around an hour from our finial destination I called up and arranged a pick up. We arrived in Fredrikshavn at the same time as my old man around 8 hours a 15min and 63 flat miles later. I think the hilliest bit on the whole ride was the bridge over some railway tracks on the way into Frederikshavn.

The Gun Powder Tower in Fredrikshavn, our final destination on today’s ride.

Got home to some brilliant home cooking prepared by my mum. They were a bit worried about this whole veggie thing, but on the second day my folks got it down to a tee and the mushroom pate, potato dauphinoise for us to share and chicken for us carnivores and the homemade ice cream was numnumnumnumnum ;)

Today’s ride was sponsored by Matilde Kakaoskummetmælk (aka EPO). This lovely chocolate drink, picked us up nicely when we had 8 miles to go and we were running low. I do not know what is different to this chocolate drink compared to others, but boy does it taste good and work.

Up at stupid o’clock, arrive at Gatwick only to find the queue for security going nearly all the way around the airport. But luckily the men and ladies behind the things going beep were working fast and we got through in no time.

Found the plane next only to sit around for 20 or so minutes before take off. So we arrived in CPH 20min late and was out off the gates in less than 45 min. And that included walking through the airport, waiting for our bike boxes to arrive and put our bike back together. The best part right where we got our bikes there was a compressed air out let so that we could get our tyres pumped, that’s Copenhagen for ya.

Out in the arrival area we got our train tickets to Aalborg which included ticket and “seat” reservations for our bikes. We also got some provisions for the 5 hour train journey a Danish pastry for Peli and a hotdog for me :)

The five hour train ride was a bit of a killer since we got up at 3:15 and we arrived at my folks at 19:00 well and truly jet lagged.
3 miles on bike and bugger ...

Today’s ride was sponsored by “en risted med det hele”. A Danish delicacy, a take on the traditional hotdog. The hot dog sausage (often a bright-red sausage) is steamed and the bread is warmed in either an oven or toaster. Ketchup, mustard and remoulade sauce is followed by a sprinkling of raw and toasted onion, and a layer of pickled cucumber. Buurrp!

Tour de hotdog
OK, so it’s my turn to do a write-up of my first cycling holiday. Hmm. I’m 37 years old and come from very flat cycling country… Why haven’t I done this before?? I managed to talk my friend Paul (Paul) into joining me on the journey from pretty much the top of Denmark over to Copenhagen in 9 days. With plenty of rest stops built in ;).
Day 1.

We took off from London on the 25th of August and even before we had done a mile Paul had a flat that got fixed on the train. We arrived at Aalborg train station where we put the bikes together and rode out to my parents.

After a quick welcome beer I took Paul out on a sightseeing tour of my home town. We took the bike lane up the big hill behind my folks’ place and I managed to climb the hill with no problems at all, only to be over taken on the last 20 metres by two 11-12 year old boys in full lycra gear and bling bikes. After a quick tour and a few drinks in town we went home to sleep, only to find out that later ...

After a quick tour and a few drinks in town we went home to sleep, only to find out that later on in the night there was a riot in town between right wing football fans and trust trustafarian at a punk concert.

13miles covered

Day 2.

After trying to explain to my folks what a fixie was and why I was doing this ride on one gear, I discovered that I did yesterday’s hill on 82″ and not the planned 74″!

So we set off to meet my friends – 15 miles south for lunch, not sure it was us that was the lunch when I saw my friend’s little puppy Asbjorn.

After a good feed we headed south towards my uncle’s place with a wee break in Hadsund.

En route we started to see many of these windmills that over the last 5-8 years have popped up all over the place in Denmark. It seems that every time I go there there are more and more.

We arrived at my uncle’s place around 1900 – an hour late as we had chit chatted for too long at my friend’s place. It was great to see my uncle for the first time in 12 years. He took very good care of us with beer and an indoor bbq as the weather looked like it would turn any minute.

50miles covered – Gmaps Pedometer

Day 3.

We took off at 7.15-7.30am. Why at this godly hour on a holiday???! Cycling has a lot to answer for. We had beautiful weather for the first 30miles. And we saw where they make Danish bacon,

and more windmills. Even at high speed and pretty much right underneath them they are do not make much more noise than a car idling.

We arrived around 10 am in Aarhus and after a small break we headed for the old town, The Old Town. Denmark’s National Open Air Museum of Urban History and Culture.. Over the years old houses from all over Denmark have been taken there and rebuilt. This summer there’s an exhibition called “Power on two wheels” where we saw a penny farthing with tyres made out of rope!

After a great lunch we headed south again in the lovely rain. Don’t worry it was a wet summer in DK too so the UK didn’t miss out on much. 10 or so miles on Paul had his second visit by the fairies in the pissing rain.

The last 5-10miles wasn’t that much fun. Though I tried out this energy thing …

as you can see that it taste great.

We were wet, and having just dried out it started again, and we were dog tired. We arrived in the dry at my big brother’s place in Horsens around 1800.

50miles covered – Gmaps Pedometer

Day 4.

After a good feed the night before and an even better better sleep we we woke on our resting day to a big breakfast. We then nicked… erm… borrowed my brother’s car and drove out to Legoland in Billund :)

I haven’t been there since I was a wee little nipper all those 25 years ago. Even the bins were made of LEGO!

And I got the coolest thing ever - a stormtrooper LEGO keyring!

now how cool is that??? :)

Day 5.

We started around 10 am with a strong side wind and the hardest hill of the whole tour still left to climb. But, after the hill at 16 miles we had the wind right at our backs. We did the climb and got the wind right on cue and started to fly along easily at 18-20mph.

In Middlefart (yup, go ahead and laugh!) we got spaghetti carbonara that fuelled us up like nobody’s business and our speed climbed to 20-22 mph. We even raced a lycra lout for a few miles at 26-28miles. I think he was a a bit pissed off that two fellas on a biking holiday (one on the most disreputable fixie in northern Europe, plus trailer, quote Rogerzilla) took chase :) We arrived in Odense around 17:30 and made our way to the H. C. Andersen quarter where I had manged to book a B&B for only £43 a night with breakfast, Bed and Breakfast Odense City – Jytte’s Bed and Breakfast.

After a little walk around town we found a place to eat with unlimited ice cream ! Oh yeah there was a steak too but more importantly, there was ice cream :) And, oh yeah, after the ice cream I beat Paul at pool. <smug>

60 miles covered – Gmaps Pedometer

Day 6.

We skipped the first part of the ride as the weather looked like it would be wet all day through with a tail wind. And you can’t cycle over the bridge between Fyn and Zealand, so we took the train to Slagelse. On the train the conductor told some people to move away from some seats as we had bikes and had booked 2 bike spaces. That’s Denmark for you :)

We had arranged to meet up with Gus69 en route and after a few texts we learned that he was already on his way. We would meet him around Soroe. Just outside town I heard the tell tell signs that Paul was about to need to turn his bike upside up and change inner tube again, for the third time. So after our little impromptu break we headed into town and had a hotdog and chocolate drink while we awaited Gus69. He arrived and after greetings and “hi”s we took off again for the last leg of the days ride. We arrived at Gus69′s place and after a shower we had a policeman burger, one of the biggest and best ones I have ever had.

And oh then there was some whisky drinking :)

34miles covered – Gmaps Pedometer

Day 7.

We took off around 11 am with the aim of arriving in Copenhagen around 1400 at my mate’s place. And Gus69 even helped us in planning the journey, with hotdog stops et all. But as we got going the speed just stayed up as we had the tailwind pushing us along.

With 10min to go the sky opend up and we got well soaked, but after a shower and a beer we managed to warm up and dry off. My mate then took us into IBM where he works to show us how they do their IBM stuff.

Ended up in a Greek restaurant, with dance, music and food that I took home on the plate :)

22miles covered – Gmaps Pedometer

Day 8.

(a broken Paul)

After some time for recovering, we got on our bikes and toured Copenhagen.

Saw all the bits and even the trustafarians again, where I saw the only 2 fixies on the whole tour. Oh, and there might have been a few beers too, but the metro took us home safely.

20miles or so covered

Day 9.

We got up to learn that there was yet and other riot in town. Hmmm, looks like it is not a good idea for me and Paul to go out drinking in another country :)

After a few hours’ relaxing with the xbox we left Copenhagen for London. We found two bike boxes at a brilliant bike shop one road over from my friend’s place which he didn’t even know about! In Copenhagen the rain started and my box got the worst of it. Cardboard and water don’t go well together. So, after the airport staff and then me dragging the box around, the box was very dead and Stella’s chain ring got very damaged. :(

But apart from Stella losing some teeth, all in all this trip was brilliant. I really enjoyed it.

Thinks that I learned (and remembered) on the trip …

Denmark is flat. Very flat.
Plenty of broken glass on the roads and plenty of flint when raining. My tyres are cut to bits now.
Use anti p+mt+re tyres and for extra safety I will use these kevlar tapes inside the tube next time.
Some bike lanes are wider than some roads in the UK!
Some hills looks like they are flat when going up them (That is your “vertical flats” :) )
Plenty of room on the roads, and good quailty road surface.
Any wind that is not directly in your face is a tailwind.
Hotdog and chocolate drink is great biking fuel.
Bikes are not seen as a problem on trains.
Bikes are part of everyday life.
Bikes that are placed outside are just for commuting to and from, and they are all over the place.
Danes just pootles along, they don’t ride hard.
Hills get bigger in your memory as you get older. I climbed the much-feared hill behind my folks’ place with no problems this summer.

Here is the clicky for all the photos take both by Paul and me.
